About Wet tile saws:

Wet tile saws cut tiles made of ceramic, leaving clean and smooth edges. Tile installers need to trim the tiles at the installation site to fit the edges of the room or to create a creative design. A table-mounted portable wet tile saw allows her to cut tiles as needed to achieve precise specifications. The saw incorporates a circular blade, similar to a wooden table saw, with a water pump and hose that constantly wets the cutting area with water to reduce friction and cool the surface.

A tile saw is one of several pieces of equipment used to cut or break tiles, placing each square tile in a designated area on the floor. Because the tiles are thick, brittle, and made of ceramic, a special saw must be used. An ordinary circular saw for wood or metal will either break the tiles or become so hot that it gets stuck and stops cutting. However, tiles are not cut well with sharp blades. Wet tile saws were invented to address all these unique properties of ceramics. It does not overheat, uses a relatively blunt blade without serrations, can be transported to the construction site, and can be installed on existing tables or sawmills. Many jobs require a tile installer to cut the floor to a certain size before installation, the wet tile is sawn to grind a passage through the tile, a blunt, wide, irregular blade uses sharp grains of sand or diamonds to cut, not sharp metal. The round blade is fitted with a plastic hose that splashes the blade and tile surface with a constant stream of cold water. This hose is connected to a submersible pump in a large container, such as a 5-gallon plastic drum.

Whenever the saw's motor is activated, the pump also provides a cooling nozzle. Excess water and ceramic dust will fall into a sump. To cut tiles with a wet tile saw, measure the precise space fit of the tiles. Incisions are usually made along the perimeter, corners, or around electrical outlets. Use a grease pen to mark the line on the full-size tile. Most saws can hold 12-inch (30 cm) tiles, but oversized saws can be rented to lay huge floor tiles.

Put on your goggles, place the tiles on a movable platform, and align the markers with the edge of the saw blade. With the motor running, slide the platform towards the blade with uniform but gentle pressure. Since you're grinding the tiles, make sure the water has enough time to cool everything.
