Industry Information Sharing
The genetic connection between granite and tectonics:
The establishment of plate tectonics theory provides a theoretical basis for the study of rock tectonics. Due to the differences in material composition, temperature and pressure conditions, and tectonic changes in different tectonic environments, magma must have different manifestations in the formation mechanism, degree of contamination, differentiation type, migration process, invasion mode, and subsequent metamorphism and deformation, and form certain rock types and magmatic rock assemblages. Barker D.S.'s basic assumptions about magmatism reflect the intrinsic relationship between magmatic activity and tectonics:
(1) Magma is produced by the partial melting of the earth's mantle or crust, and there is no long-term worldwide magma chamber.
(2) Melting is a reflection of the dynamic process, heat cannot be concentrated in a small high-temperature space, and radiant heat energy alone is not enough to cause melting. Therefore, there are three ways for magma to form: (a) the rock reaches a high temperature state through the heat conduction of the lower magma or the migration of faults, shear, subduction, etc., (b) the depressurization process of fault uplift or penetration, and (c) the change of material composition with low solidus during metamorphism.
(3) Even if magma entering the earth's crust is instantaneous on geological time scales, different phases of magmatism (even if modified) will retain their chemical characteristics [1].
These basic hypotheses clearly state the genetic link between magmatism and tectonics, the first two hypotheses illustrate the restrictive effects of geotectonics on magmatism, and the third hypothesis illustrates the possibility of exploring the relationship between the two.
Peive A.B et al. directly linked the formation of granite to the evolution of the earth's crust, and divided the development and evolution of the earth's crust into three ordered stages: oceanic, transitional, and continental [2]. The oceanic crust has been modified in a series of complex processes such as subduction, and evolved into the transition crust. In this process, through local melting or metasomatism, basalt can form locally new granite layers in the immature transition crust (such as island arcs), constituting the "germination body" of the future continental crust, which is obviously characterized by the content of Na₂O greater than that of K₂O, reflecting the nascent nature and immaturity characteristics of granite layers. Clase graniteization is a product of the maturation of the transitional crust, reflecting the continuous transformation of oceanic crust materials and the gradual evolution of continental crust. The development of plagioclase granitization to large-scale potassium feldsparization is a prominent event in the evolution stage from the transition crust to the continental crust, and the content of K₂O and Na₂O also changes, making the crust move towards the final maturity stage. This new understanding reveals the significance of granite in tectonic evolution, and clarifies the types and properties of granite at each stage of crustal evolution, which becomes a direct indicator of different stages of crustal evolution.
In recent years, Wickham S.M.'s research on the metamorphism of the Pyrenees Orientales has suggested that granite can be formed in the continental rift, a tectonic environment of high temperature and low pressure. Due to the tensile and thinning of the earth's crust due to the rifting action, the upwelling of the thermal material in the upper mantle is caused by the partial remelting of the crustal material, resulting in the formation of a large number of granite intrusions and several condensed metamorphic rocks representing extremely high geothermal gradients [3]. The thermal material of the upper mantle may also be directly involved in the mixing and transformation of magma in the rift valley environment, which transforms the crustal material into a transitional type and forms a tensile transition crust, so He et al. proposed a five-stage model of crustal evolution [4].
All these new understandings of the relationship between granite and tectonic processes are the basis for our study of the intrinsic relationship between the two, and also the theoretical basis for our tectonic environment judgment of granite.
