If you are running a stone fabrication shop, I bet you have this question at least once: what speed should I run the blade for bridge saw machines? Too slow, production goes down. Too fast, blade wears like crazy and the cut edge looks bad. Honestly, we get this question from customers almost every week. So I put together this guide based on what we actually use in our workshop and what we tell our bridge saw clients. Hope it saves you some headache.
First, Why Blade Speed Matters So Much
Let me start with something we learned the hard way. A few years back, one of our customers told us his brand new diamond blade lasted only half the time it should. We checked everything - machine pressure, water flow, material type - nothing seemed wrong. Then we looked at the spindle speed. He was running a 600mm blade at 1800 RPM on hard granite. That's way too fast.
The problem is simple physics. The outer edge of a bigger blade moves much faster than a small one at the same RPM. It's called peripheral speed, or cutting speed. You want the diamonds on the blade rim to hit the stone at the right speed - not too slow, not too fast.
Get it right, and you get:
Clean cut surface, less chipping
Longer blade life (sometimes 30-40% longer)
Less strain on the machine spindle
Faster cutting, actually - counter-intuitive but true
Get it wrong, and you burn through blades fast, get rough cuts, and might even damage the arbor bearing over time.

How to Read This Table - The Short Version
Pick the column that matches your stone type, find your blade size, that's your target RPM. Simple as that.
But wait - the real world is never that clean. Here's what the textbooks don't tell you.
What the Table Doesn't Tell You (Real Factory Experience)
1. Not All Granite Is the Same
This is the biggest mistake people make. They see "granite" and set one speed. But granite hardness varies a lot.
Hard granite like India Black, Shanxi Black, some Brazilian granites - stick to 30 m/s. If you push faster, the blade glazes over. You'll actually cut slower because the diamonds can't expose fresh edges.
Medium granite - most common kitchen countertop materials fall here. 35 m/s works well.
Soft granite like some Chinese white granites or porous types - you can go 40 m/s, sometimes even higher if the blade quality is good.
How do you know which one you have? If the blade wears fast but the cut is clean, you might be running too fast. If the cut is slow and the blade looks shiny (glazed), you're probably going too fast for hard material - counter-intuitive, I know.
2. Blade Quality Changes Everything
A cheap blade and a premium blade from a reputable brand - same size, same material, but the optimal speed can differ by 10-15%. Premium blades with better diamond concentration and bond quality can handle higher speeds. Cheaper blades? You want to run them slower, otherwise the bond wears away too fast and you lose diamonds before they're done working.
We usually tell our customers: if you invest in good blades, you can run 5-10% faster than the table suggests for the same blade life. It balances out.
3. Wet Cut vs Dry Cut - Big Difference
All the numbers above assume you're cutting with water, which you should be. If for some reason you're doing dry cutting (we don't recommend it for bridge saws), drop the speed by 20-30%. Heat builds up fast without water, and the blade bond softens. You'll destroy a blade in no time.
4. Cut Depth Matters Too
Deep cut? The blade is in contact with more material, so there's more friction and heat. You might want to drop the speed by 5-10%. Shallow cut or profiling? You can push a bit higher.
On our 5-axis bridge saw machines, we actually have a feature that adjusts speed automatically based on cut depth. It's not a must-have, but it does save blade cost over time.
5. New Blade vs Used Blade
Brand new blade? Run it 10-15% slower for the first 10-15 cuts. This seats the diamonds properly. If you go full speed right away, you can knock diamonds loose before the bond has worn enough to hold them securely. We see this all the time with customers who just pop a new blade on and crank it up. Then they complain the blade is bad. Usually it's just not broken in properly.
Common Mistakes We See All the Time
Mistake #1: Using the same RPM for every blade size. I see this more than I should. Shop sets the machine to 1500 RPM and leaves it there, whether they're using a 350mm blade or a 600mm blade. That 600mm blade at 1500 RPM is cutting at 47 m/s - way too fast for granite. No wonder blades don't last.
Mistake #2: Going faster to cut faster. Seems logical - higher RPM = faster cut. But beyond a certain point, higher speed actually makes cutting slower because the blade glazes. The diamonds can't fracture properly to expose new sharp edges. You end up pushing harder, which puts more stress on the machine and still cuts slow.
Mistake #3: Ignoring the material. Marble at granite speed? You'll chip the edge like crazy and the blade will wear fast. Granite at marble speed? Glazed blade, slow cutting. Take 30 seconds to check what you're cutting and adjust the speed. It pays off.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the table is a starting point. Every shop is a bit different. Your blade brand, your water quality, your machine's condition - all of it affects what speed works best. Start with these numbers, then adjust based on what you see in the cut quality and blade wear.
If you're not sure, start on the slower side and work your way up. Slower than optimal just means slightly lower production. Faster than optimal means expensive blade damage and possibly ruined slabs.
