The concept and classification of stone

Stone is often used as a high-end building decoration material. Currently, the common stones on the market mainly include marble, granite, terrazzo, and synthetic stone.

Among them, white marble is the top grade among marbles; granite is harder than marble; terrazzo is made of cement, concrete and other raw materials; synthetic stone is made of natural materials.

It is made of crushed natural stone as raw material, plus adhesive, etc., which are then pressed and polished. Because the latter two are artificially made, their strength is not as high as natural stone.

Stones for building decoration mainly fall into two categories: natural stone and artificial stone.

Natural stone is the main type.

It is a high-grade decorative material and is mainly used in projects with high decorative requirements. Artificial stone is a lower-grade decoration. Materials are only used in medium and low-end interior decoration projects.

Natural stone refers to the general term for materials that are mined from natural rock masses and processed into blocks or plates. There are two main types of natural stone used for architectural decoration: marble and granite. The so-called marble refers to sedimentary or metamorphic carbonate rocks, including marble, dolomite, limestone, sandstone, shale and slate. For example, my country's famous white marble is dolomite produced in Fangshan, Beijing, Yunnan marble is produced in Dali County, and the famous Dandong green is serpentinized skarn.

Similarly, various types of magmatic rocks mined as stone materials, such as granite, andesite, diabase, green feldspar, gneiss, etc., are called granite. For example, the white granite in Baihujian in Beijing is granite, Qing in Jinan is gabbro, and the black granite in Qingdao is diabase.

Artificial stone is a synthetic decorative material.

According to the different binders used, it can be divided into two categories: organic artificial stone and inorganic artificial stone. According to the different production processes, it can be divided into four types: polyester artificial marble, composite artificial marble, silicate artificial marble, and sintered artificial marble. Among the four types of artificial stone decorative materials, organic type (polyester type) is the most commonly used and has the best physical and chemical properties.
