Purchasing Guide--Stones Used in Interior Decoration

Stone is a common decoration material in the home, mostly used in the living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom floor, wall, etc. In addition to being a decoration material, stone is also a good decoration material. For example, in the living room and dining room, decorating the theme wall with a few pieces of stone may create another effect. Moreover, stone is a strong, corrosion-resistant, and age-resistant material, which is the most suitable for interior decoration.

The main types and applications of stone:

The varieties of stone commonly used in home decoration are: marble, artificial stone, cultural stone, sandstone, granite, etc.

1. Marble

The natural and layered textures and colours of marble make it ideal for creating a gorgeous home. Although the hardness of marble is not high, it is not easy to be worn out, and it is suitable for decoration on walls, floors, countertops, etc. in the home space.

2. Artificial stone

Artificial stone is a new type of decorative material that uses natural granite and natural marble slag as aggregate to synthesize it. Artificial stone is stronger than natural stone in terms of oil resistance, moisture resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and high temperature resistance. However, artificial stone is artificially manufactured, so the texture is not as natural as natural stone, and the appearance is mostly solid color or speckled granite stone.

Because the hardness of artificial stone is slightly harder than that of marble, it can be spliced seamlessly, easy to shape, and not easy to absorb dirt, so it is also very suitable for wall and countertop decoration.

3. Cultural stone

Cultural stone is an artificial stone formed by mixing cement with sand and gravel and other materials and pouring into abrasives. The attractive feature of cultural stone is that the color and texture can maintain the natural and original style, coupled with the change of color and luster, the connotation and artistry of the stone texture can be fully displayed, in line with the cultural concept of returning to nature, so it is called "cultural stone". Cultural stone is often used for the decoration of TV background walls, entrances, relay furnaces, balconies, etc. According to its surface characteristics, cultural stone can be divided into two categories: imitation rock and imitation masonry.

4. Sandstone

Sandstone is formed from quartz grains (sand) and is structurally stable, usually light brown or red, containing mainly silicon, calcium, clay, and iron oxide. The most popular color and pattern for designers is Australian sandstone, which can be used to make various relief decorations on the wall. Australian sandstone is an ecological and environmentally friendly stone, and its products have the characteristics of no pollution, no radiation, no reflection, no weathering, no discoloration, heat absorption, heat preservation, and non-slip. Sandstone can be used for the decoration of indoor walls and floors, and can also be used for carving, sandstone carving is a widely used interior decoration. Sandstone is used for interior decoration and is suitable for many styles, for example, if the room is Southeast Asian, you can place sandstone Buddha statues or elephant ornaments to add stylistic characteristics.

5. Granite

Granite is an igneous rock formed by the condensation of magma below the earth's surface, and the main components are feldspar and quartz. The texture is hard, its hardness is higher than that of marble, it is not easy to weather, the color is beautiful, and the appearance color can be maintained for more than 100 years. Due to its high hardness and abrasion resistance, it is not only used as a high-grade building decoration material, but also the material of choice for open-air carving. In addition, because it is rarer than ceramics or any other man-made material, proper granite flooring in the living room can increase the value of the property and enhance the artistic expression of the living room.

Compared with marble, granite has a more monotonous pattern change, so it is generally less used for indoor floor paving, but is mostly used in frequently used areas such as stairs, washbasins, cabinet surfaces, etc., and sometimes as a marble edge decoration. The gas produced by the error and needle decay in granite is absorbed and accumulated by the human body for a long time, which will form radiation in the body and increase the incidence of lung cancer, so granite should not be used in large quantities indoors, especially in bedrooms and children's rooms.

Stone Selection Guides:

1. Selection of natural stones (including marble, granite, sand camp)

Look at the inner texture. You can drop a drop of water on the back of the stone. If all the water is absorbed quickly, it means that the particles inside the stone are loose or there are gaps. On the contrary, if the water droplets remain basically motionless in place, or are less absorbed, it means that the stone material is fine and dense.

Look at the appearance of the stone. Under sufficient light conditions, check whether the stone is smooth, whether there are defects in the edges and corners, whether there are cracks, scratches, and blisters; the surface texture of the stone is clear and the tone is pure. The natural stones produced by regular manufacturers include high-quality, first-class, and qualified products.

Assigned to check radioactivity. When purchasing marble, ask the manufacturer to produce an inspection report, and pay attention to the date of the inspection report. The same type of marble has great differences in radioactivity due to its different mineral points, mineral layers, and origins. Especially when used in large quantities in engineering, it should be Test multiple times in batches or stages.

2. Selection of artificial stone

Look at appearance. Check whether the color of the sample is pure and not turbid, has good permeability, has no glue-like texture similar to plastic on the surface, and has no small pores on the back of the board.

Look at the material. Generally, pure acrylic artificial stone has better performance. Pure acrylic artificial stone can be hot-bent and deformed at about 120°C without cracking.

Test the feel. When touched by hand, the surface of the artificial stone sample has a silky feel, no astringency, and no obvious unevenness. Use your fingernail to scratch the surface of the artificial stone. There should be no obvious scratches.

Oil stain resistance test. Pour soy sauce on the artificial stone and wipe it every few minutes. If there are still obvious traces of oil stains, it proves that the artificial stone has poor oil resistance and is not very good for making countertops.

3. Selection of cultural stones

Test the feel. Touch the surface of the cultural stone with your hands. If the surface is smooth and has no astringent feeling, the quality is better.

Measure hardness. Use a coin to scratch the surface of the cultural stone. Good quality will not leave scratches.

Look at the elasticity. Use two identical cultural stone samples to knock each other. If it is not easy to break, it is a high-quality product.

Look at the surface. Pay attention to its style, color, and flatness to see if it is uniform and free of impurities.
